AAT student Elena is shortlisted for PQ Magazine’s Distance Learning Student of the Year!

AVADO are pleased to be shortlisted for three PQ Awards this year! We’re finalists for Online College of the Year,  Best Use of Social Media, and one of our AAT Students is even up for the Distance Learning Student of the Year award!

That student is Elena Brown, who was determined to get qualified despite working in a second language, in a new country, with a new baby!

Elena Brown was a full-time mum when she moved to England from Georgia with her young family to start a new life. After her second baby, Elena wanted to find a career, and her mother-in-law (a bookkeeper) suggested the flexibility of accountancy would be perfect. She chose an AAT distance learning course with AVADO as an ideal route into the profession.

Finding time to study while looking after a baby was challenging, and Elena had to extend her tuition period to cope. With her lack of accounting experience and learning in her second language, Elena found the course very difficult initially but was determined to succeed. Once her youngest daughter started nursery, she tackled her learning with renewed fervour:

“Every morning I dropped the children off and for three hours I was studying. No cleaning, no cooking; just studying!”

With the support of her family and tutor, the hard work paid off:

“In the beginning it was very hard I cannot deny, but then the penny dropped, and I understood the concepts. After that it was easy!”

With her AAT Level 2 passed Elena is now keen to move on to Level 3 and put her skills into practice with an accountancy role.

Her tutor Adam said:

“Elena’s dedication and hard work in overcoming such challenges make her an inspiration to distance learners everywhere.”

We couldn’t agree more! We’ll have our fingers crossed for Elena at the the awards ceremony, so watch this space for more coverage.
